If you drive the scenic Tunnel of Trees route north from Harbor Springs, you’ll arrive in historic Cross Village, the crossroad between Harbor Springs and Mackinaw City, where a white cross stands as a beacon on the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan.
Here you’ll find a rich history of Michigan’s logging era and Ottawa and Chippewa culture. You’ll also find the famous Leg’s Inn restaurant and bar, with its unique architecture and garden dining with an extraordinary view of the lake (try to spot the four lighthouses visible on the horizon!). Find “A Little Touch of Old Europe” at the Old World Cafe, serving breakfast and lunch. Stop in the Three Pines Studio for unique art or to participate in a workshop.
Locals know to head a few more miles north to Sturgeon Bay for its expanse of sandy beaches isolated from civilization. Cross Village is a great jumping off point to hike or bike the North Country Trail, which winds through miles of natural woodlands, passing lakes and streams before reaching Wilderness State Park.
